Cut a hole in the center of the bread with a cookie cutter or the top of a glass.
Heat an electric griddle to 350 F or heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Place 1 teaspoon of butter on the griddle.
Toast for 1–2 minutes until the bread is golden brown, then flip.
Crack the egg directly into the hole or break one egg into a small dish and gently slide it into the hole of one of the bread slices.
Season as desired.
Cover and reduce heat to medium-low, cook for about 7–10 minutes until egg is just set but yolk is runny.
